Greg Southern, founder of recruitment-to-recruitment specialists Hamilton George, talks his people-first service and inspiring Manchester’s youth.
Your job is one of the biggest aspects of your life. It’s where you spend the majority of your time and it has a huge impact on your wellbeing. Expanding your team or making that big career move can be a daunting task. Making the right decision relies on an experienced guiding hand to help you take the next step that’s right for you. A key figure who is supporting Manchester talent on their career journeys is Greg Southern, founder of recruitment to recruitment specialists Hamilton George.
Greg has seen the industry transform dramatically from the introduction of technology into the recruitment process to being associated with a ruthless reputation. Despite these changes, what remains at the heart of Greg’s approach is people. When starting his own company, Greg knew he wanted to do things differently. Greg explains “The most important aspect of recruiting is the human element. We have built very strong relationships with our candidates and clients”. From the beginning, Greg made a commitment to putting people first and fostering a friendly approach. It’s these strong connections and consistent delivery of excellent customer service that’s won Hamilton George clients from boutique consultancies to multinational recruiters.
This personal approach is strengthened by Greg’s own experience. Greg knows recruitment inside out: having started out as a Trainee, Greg rose through the ranks in recruitment companies across Manchester. In 2013, Greg’s recruitment journey came full circle when he set up Hamilton George. As an expert in all things recruitment, Greg’s experience has put him “in a good position to advise and coach other people”. Whether he’s working with his team, candidates or clients, Greg knows what it’s like to be in their shoes. He explains “I’ve always taken a hands-on approach in coaching candidates and ensuring that they were well prepared for each stage of their interviews.”
This comprehensive understanding of the recruitment process, from both a client and candidate perspective, is invaluable. Greg says “Strong candidates are hard to come by and the competition is fierce” but Hamilton’s George’s people-first strategy has won them their fair share of great talent. The drive to deliver and get the best for candidates and clients stems from Hamilton George’s responsiveness. Greg explains “We move quickly and make the process as efficient as possible for both companies and candidates. Our record was three working days from initial contact with a candidate to them accepting a job offer.”
Greg’s commitment to nurturing Manchester talent and passion for sharing his wealth of knowledge is the foundation on which Hamilton George is built. There’s no greater testament to Greg and his team’s passion than the full-circle journeys they’ve inspired. Greg says “We can give examples of candidates we’ve placed into recruitment, who have then gone on to start their own recruitment companies and have come back to us to help hire for their growing businesses.”
Much more than a track record of recruitment success stories, Greg’s desire to help people find the right career for them has led him to work with Manchester’s young talent. Through Ernst & Young’s ‘EY Foundation’, Greg is encouraging Manchester’s next generation to keep an open mind when it comes to careers. By sharing his own entrepreneurial story, Greg wants students to realise that “starting a business can be a fulfilling way to launch a career”.
Keen to facilitate more success stories, Greg’s latest project is investing in other businesses that need capital to grow or launch. For Greg, the ultimate goal is to help someone on the same path he once was. He says “It would be great to invest in someone else who wanted to start their own recruitment company.” Along with upholding Hamilton George’s reputation for excellent customer service, the next step in Greg’s own career journey is enabling someone else to truly come full circle as he has done, championing Manchester’s entrepreneurial spirit.
