Manchester's 30UNDER30 Joe Averill, at OBI Property & Studio OBI

Joe Averill, Transactions & Asset Management at OBI Property and Managing Director at Studio OBI

Joe Averill joined OBI following a career move which saw him leave the tech/software industry into the world of real estate. Joe played an integral part in the rapid growth of his former employer AppLearn, with one of his most notable achievements being the sealing of a relationship with one of the UK’s largest brands. Joe’s tenacious approach saw him rise quickly through the AppLearn ranks after graduating from Bristol’s University of West England with a BA Hons Degree in Business Studies. His arrival at the OBI team grew the skillset of the Transactions & Asset Management department, with the specific aim of bringing a fresh approach to lead generation. Joe supports in advising on the end-to-end real estate strategy for a number of the UK’s fastest growing businesses, relative to their workspace relocation and expansion initiatives.

“Both living and working in Manchester has been invaluable for my career.”

What’s your most significant accomplishment to date?

I’ve enjoyed every second at OBI Property since I’ve joined so I’d have to relate my biggest accomplishment alongside this business. In my first year here, I was fortunate enough to win MYTA’s Property Professional of the Year and MIMA’s Business Development Professional of the year. A big part of this is down to the leadership, culture and strong team ethic here at OBI Property, which has provided me with a strong platform to build my career.

Who inspires you?

When I look at who inspires me, it is always the people that are always so demanding from themselves and their teams. What inspires me is strong leadership – those that can consistently remain self-driven and self-motivated to lead their teams to success. Therefore, someone who inspired me growing up was Roy Keane, captain of Manchester United. His ability to drive the team week in, week out and expect results was always something I looked up to.

How has living and working in Manchester helped you achieve your goals?

Both living and working in Manchester has been invaluable for my career. I made the move into the city as soon as I joined OBI. When you love what you do, I believe your perception is more of the view; ‘work-life integration’ as opposed to ‘work-life’ balance. Living in the city has been crucial for me building a strong network – it really helps me to attend networking events, dinners and spend time with a number of other city centre professionls.

What advice would you give to your 16-year-old self?

Without a doubt – it would be to dedicate time investing in yourself. Understand your weaknesses and invest as much time as possible in to strengthening your skill set and shaping yourself for the future.

What are your business goals for 2018?

My business goals include;

Participating in a number of panel session and business events this year and improve on my public speaking.

Further to this, I will be working with the OBI team to raise as much as possible for the Factory Youth Zone charity – The Factory Youth Zone provides a unique, safe place for young people aged 8 – 19, up to 25 with additional needs, from across Manchester. It organises a wealth of sport and creative activities and the Charity is very close to us at OBI.

Make a success of our latest business proposition…’Calico’. Calico is a new piece of technology designed to bring together directors, executives, and leaders, enabling them to connect, communicate and collaborate. More will be revealed in the coming months…exciting times!

Where do you see yourself in twenty years’ time?

The dream would be…retired!!
