Wives Katie and Emma Nattrass-Daniels met at Boohoo and found both a professional and personal chemistry before getting married in 2015 and launching Crème Creative in January 2016. Based in Manchester, Crème Creative services national and international clients such as New Balance, Footasylum, Lacoste, Mallet Footwear, isawitfirst.com and Koi Footwear.
What makes Manchester a great place to start a business?
Manchester’s a great city to be in right now, there’s a lot going on and the city has so many great plans, including arts centre and new home of the Manchester International Festival, The Factory. There’s more to life than London, right? And Manchester has this strong fashion presence and history as well, which is fitting for us as fashion specialists. We’ve carved out a niche in what is becoming quite a competitive industry.
What makes a great startup in 2018?
The creative industry is constantly developing and refreshing so the ability to really stay ahead of the curve is important as is finding your niche before you start out and understanding your potential clients’ actual needs – all will really help grow and develop your business in the right direction.
What inspired you to start the business?
It really came down to ourselves and the people we are, we knew we both just had so much more to give. We have drive and vision and that really wasn’t being utilised working in-house full-time. That feeling paired with a “what do we have to lose?” mentality, we just went for it and worked harder than we ever had done before…and here we are!
What makes your business stand out from the crowd?
When we first started Crème two and a half years ago we really spotted a lack of creative agencies that specifically serviced the fashion and footwear industries so with our collective 22 years’ experience working in these exacts areas it was a very natural direction for the business to go in.
What surprised you the most when setting up your business?
How much you work but how utterly liberating it is! 12 hour days are common but not once have we had the ‘Monday dreads’! Setting up your own business is by no means easy but looking back at what we have achieved in such a short amount of time, you just can’t beat that feeling – this is what we have built. We don’t know what the future holds, but that’s exciting! We believe that if you work hard and you’re a good person, then good things will happen.
What keeps you motivated?
We’re both motivated by the ‘wins’ – winning new clients and booking in new work is a total high. And nothing is as motivating as doing it for yourself.
How does your business help give back to Manchester?
We’ve just moved into our new office and studio and have made an effort to ensure it’s as sustainable as possible – from our waste to our loo roll! We also recently supported a local women’s charity – called Every Month – by creating assets for them for their latest campaign. As a business, we try to give back as much as we can and hope to get more involved as we grow.
What are your business goals for the next 3 years?
We really want to be an established and respected fashion and footwear creative agency attracting major brands and producing world-class work! We are proud to say that we already class some of the world’s best – and growing – brands as our clients and we really want to keep that momentum going. We also want to create and grow a great team who all share our aim – to be the best.
