Tom Pickersgill is the Founder of Broadstone, a staffing platform that leverages Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to match job-seekers with work opportunities at some of the UK’s largest private security employers.

Tom and the Broadstone team are on a mission to change the way people and companies approach their work lives. Broadstone allows job seekers to access temporary staffing jobs, as well as permanent jobs through the app. The platform features many tech innovations including a machine learning matching algorithm, facial recognition identity checks, automated invoice/payroll processing, AI-driven chatbot and a geolocation punch clock – making the product one of the most innovative staffing platforms in the market.
Tom worked in the security industry providing employment tax solutions for three years prior to launching Broadstone during which he gained unique insight into the sector and built invaluable relationships with key industry stakeholders. He is a first-time founder and with hard work, passion and talent he has built a fast growth business, attracting a strong team of ‘A’ players to bring disruption to an established industry by introducing technology.
What makes Manchester a great place to start a business?
Manchester is a thriving community; a fantastic city to live and work and as such, we’ll always see it as our home. We have a fantastic pool of talent based in Manchester that gets stronger by the day and we’ve also got access to a community of business leaders and CEOs who are on a similar journey to us. This provides us with unique opportunities to network and share ideas and best practice. It’s a great community to be a part of.
What makes a great startup in 2018?
There is so much start-up competition, both here in Manchester and across the country, that to stand out and be successful, you’ve got to be bold and hold true to your vision for the business. Building a strong team with the right skill sets to deliver that vision is critically important. We’ve got fantastic people around us who all have great ideas and the shared desire to change something for the better. For me, that’s a winning formula.
What inspired you to start the business?
Alongside my co-founders, James and Nick, we identified a sector that had not innovated much in over a decade. Within recruitment, processes were still antiquated and this baffled us. We saw an opportunity to make a real impact and we jumped on it. From where we began our journey in 2016, we’ve since expanded the scope of our service to arrive at where we are today – a staffing platform that leverages AI and Machine Learning to match job seekers with work opportunities at some of the largest employers in the UK.
What makes your business stand out from the crowd?
Being bold. We have big ambitions and a vision of becoming a global, multi-billion pound business – or a ‘unicorn’ as it’s often known as. The temporary staffing sector is huge, and the business we are building offers a unique proposition to it – a future-proof approach to recruitment that responds to the needs of today’s job seekers.
What surprised you the most when setting up your business?
The fact that the challenges never stop coming and that having perseverance is huge if you want to make the business successful! When we first set up the business, we overcame the initial challenges but even after that, it was far from smooth sailing. With every milestone we reach, a new batch of challenges present themselves. However, as first-time founders, we quickly learned to see these challenges as opportunities; with each problem we overcome, our business becomes more valuable.
What keeps you motivated?
Building a product that provides an amazing experience for people and seeing that translate into positive feedback for our team and business. Achieving success is a key motivator for me too, whether that be raised investment, a motivated team or satisfied customers. It can all become quite addictive!
