30 Under 30: Franky Rousell, Creative Director & Co-Founder of Jolie Studio

Franky Rousell is the Co-Founder and Creative Director at Jolie Studio, an interior design studio based in Manchester.

What is your most significant accomplishment to date?

I would say that starting Jolie Studio is without a doubt my biggest accomplishment so far. I always knew that one day I wanted my own business, but I didn’t ever imagine that the time would come so soon into my career, and even though all signs were pointing to this being the perfect timing, it still took the wise words of my co-founder Chloe, family and friends to truly push me out of my comfort zone and give me the confidence to make this a reality.

What inspires you?

Having been bought up in a loving household, with a mother who was a nurse, and a father who was travelling the world inventing software, I feel I am a direct result of the moral conscience of my mother and the determined innovator of my father. They are and continue to be my inspiration, along with the many incredible people that I am lucky enough to meet and learn from as a result of starting my own business.

How has living in Manchester helped you to achieve your goals?

From the moment I moved to Manchester five years ago, I realised this was a big city with a small community feel. The history of industry and music, along with the constant redevelopment and willingness to accept and progress makes this City feel like an incredibly exciting place to be. I love that you can walk through the City Centre and likely bump into a friend, which sparks a chance conversation and catch up coffee. For business, this is incredibly valuable, as sometimes we find ourselves lost in the abyss of email and social media, and forget to get out and socialise. So just grabbing a coffee or an after work drink can lead to a catch up with a new or existing client.

What advice would you give your 16-year-old self?

I would love to go back and tell myself to not worry so much about what I am going to do in the future. There was so much pressure at this age to pick certain subjects or select a certain path, to guarantee entrance into a particular career. I had no idea what I wanted to do, all I knew was that I loved the freedom of art, the discipline of maths, and I wanted to improve peoples lives. It was only at the age of 25 that I really found the opportunity to apply all of that, and I had to create my own business to do it. Stay focused on what you love, and the rest will follow.

What are your business goals for 2018?

Our aim this year is to continue sharing the message about Jolie, work on some really exciting projects and look to grow the team.

Where do you see yourself in twenty years time?

I want to make sure that no matter where I am or what I am doing, I am always innovating and designing. I would love to be travelling to different cities, hopefully running several Jolie offices across the world. From a more personal angle, living in a beautiful home which I can call my own, with Children and lots of dogs!

Our first annual Manchester’s ‘30 Under 30’ highlights young people who are the best of the best in our city. If you’d like to be featured in 2019’s ‘30 Under 30, please contact bethany@amagazine.co.uk.
